Splat Mind

Ice bath in Cancun, set up where you're staying.

You rented the villa. We bring the ice, the tubs and the person who walks your group through it. Garden, terrace or the sand out front, whichever side of the house works.

What a private ice bath session actually looks like

It runs about an hour, and it doesn't open with ice.

First there's movement: an activation to get the body warm and awake. Then guided breathing, long enough that the nervous system catches up with what's coming. Only after that, the tubs. You're in for one to two minutes, with someone next to you the whole time. Hot tea at the end, while the group comes back down.

Mornings suit it. If the day is ours to plan, we'd take 10:30.

It isn't an endurance test. The point runs closer to the opposite: finding out the body handles more than the head was willing to allow.

What it looks like on the day

Photos and video from real sessions: a villa garden, and one setup on the sand. Nothing here is stock.

  • Four tubs lined up on the lawn, palms behind them and towels laid out to the side
  • The guide, standing over the tub, holds the hands of a guest submerged in the ice water
  • A guest in the tub with her chin lifted, breathing, ice water up to her chest
  • Two tubs in use at once, a guest getting into the far one and another already sitting in the near one
  • A guest in the tub with ice filling the water to the rim, and a hand on his shoulder from outside
  • A guest sitting in the tub set up on a resort's wooden deck, sand and greenery behind him

Where we set up the ice bath at your villa

Garden, terrace or beach. It happens outdoors, so the spot is whatever the house gives us: a lawn, a deck with a view, the sand in front of the door.

We arrive with everything and leave without a trace. A group of thirty gets three tubs, so nobody spends the morning standing in line waiting for a turn.

Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Tulum.

Who books this

Groups, not individuals. A bachelor or bachelorette party. A family that took a house for the week. A company that flew the team down and wants the first morning to count. Friends who'd rather do something at 10:30 than wait around for happy hour.

Six people is the floor. Thirty is the ceiling.

We quote the event, not the head. One booking, one price, whatever the group decides to call it.

What's included

  • An activation and warm-up before anything gets cold
  • Guided breathing techniques
  • The plunge itself, one to two minutes, accompanied from start to finish
  • Three tubs for groups of 30
  • Hot tea to close

Everything comes in and goes out the same morning. Anything not on this list gets settled in writing when we quote, so nothing turns into a surprise on the day.

The static dance at the close

Coming out of the water the body is wide open and running on energy it doesn't know what to do with. Instead of sending everyone off to change, that's where the static dance goes: free movement to music, no choreography, no steps to learn, nobody watching.

You don't need to know how to dance and it's nothing like a class. It's the part nobody expects and the one they talk about afterwards.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Reduces inflammation and stress
  • Improves respiratory capacity
  • Activates circulation and presence

What the session is built around is breathing: the capacity for it and the awareness of it, which is the part people tend to carry home. And the state that follows the plunge, circulation moving and attention parked hard in the present tense, which is a lot harder to arrange on purpose than it sounds.

People come out of it in a different mood than they went in. What that's worth is theirs to decide.

The Full Experience

The whole morning, built as one complete experience. On top of the ice bath and the static dance come a yoga class and a breath work session.

It's the one we recommend from Mind: a full reset for the body, the mind and the soul.

  • Reborn in the Ice

An exercise in presence. First the body gets going with movement and conscious breathing, to ready the nervous system; then comes the plunge, one to two minutes, accompanied the whole time. It isn't about endurance: it's finding out the body handles more than the head was willing to allow.

  • Static dance

Organic movement, breathing and music (tribal, soft electronic or ancestral medicine music). Each person explores their own way of moving, lets tension go and reconnects with something vital. It ends in catharsis more often than you would expect.

  • The whole class in downward dog on mats, under a palapa

    Sunrise yoga

Set up outside and early: garden, terrace or sand. Slow movement synced to the breath, no show-off postures and no need to have practised before. It opens the day and leaves the group ready for whatever comes next.

  • Breath work

A whole session given over to breathing. It works through guided cycles that first ramp up and then let go: the body reaches a state it doesn't get to by sitting still and doing nothing. No experience or fitness required. It's done lying down and everyone goes at their own pace. It's the technique underneath the ice bath and the meditation, here as a practice in its own right.

Safety, and who shouldn't get in

The session is led by a certified ice bath coach who stays with the plunge from start to finish. Nobody goes in alone and nobody stays in longer than they decide: you can get out at any moment.

Before getting in, everyone signs an informed consent that sets out what the activity is, what the risks are, and that the plunge is voluntary. The breathing and safety instructions come before anyone touches the water.

  • Heart conditions, high blood pressure or arrhythmia
  • Asthma, COPD or any other respiratory condition
  • Pregnancy
  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes, Raynaud’s or peripheral neuropathy, unless your doctor clears you
  • A cold, a fever, open wounds or a skin infection

This is not a medical treatment and doesn't replace one. If you have a condition that isn't on the list and you're unsure, check with your doctor first and tell us when you arrive: whoever sits it out still stays with the group.

Frequently asked

How long does the whole thing take?

Around 60 minutes, door to door. Mornings work best; 10:30 is the hour we'd pick if the choice is ours.

Is this the same as a cold plunge?

Yes. Cold plunge, ice bath, cold water immersion: same thing, different names. We call it an ice bath because that is what most of our guests call it, but if you came looking for a cold plunge in Cancun, this is it.

How long are we actually in the ice?

One to two minutes, with someone alongside you the entire time. Not longer. It isn't a contest and nobody is keeping score.

How many of us do we need to be?

Six at the minimum, thirty at the most. At thirty we bring three tubs so the group keeps moving instead of queueing.

Where does it happen?

At your villa: garden, terrace or beach, depending on the property. We cover Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Tulum.

Does anyone need experience?

No. The activation and the breathing come first for exactly that reason. Nobody gets dropped into cold water cold.

Is there anyone who shouldn't do it?

Yes, and it's written above: heart conditions, high blood pressure, asthma or COPD, pregnancy, epilepsy, diabetes, Raynaud's, neuropathy, or having a cold or an open wound. If you're unsure, ask your doctor first and tell us when you arrive. Whoever sits it out still stays with the group: nobody gets split off.
